Singapore and Portugal: 40 years of diplomatic relations
The footsteps of Portuguese culture in Southeast Asia are present since the 16th century. At the time, Portuguese trade and political occupation in the region started to shape what we have today, with strong marks in culinary and linguistic. Many are the examples of Portuguese food and words adopted and introduced in the Malay language, like almari (cupboard) from armário, baldi (bucket) from balde, bendera (flag) from bandeira, just to cite a few of them.
When on January 7th, 1981 Portugal and Singapore established diplomatic relations, a new chapter of this long history started to be written, connecting these two nations with both developed on a maritime and logistics tradition.
